Plans are being formulated for the production of an East Leake calendar for 2018 to enable local groups and residents to advertise village events in it.

The move follows a suggestion from a resident that such a calendar be produced, and members of the council agreed to support the ideas, asking the resident

to go ahead and produce it , with the council agreeing they will print it.

The council are to assist by seeking dates for future events through their own newsletter. And the idea can also be promoted through the Village’s website Events Guide. CARE ASSOCIATION.

Nearly 30 residents attended the annual meeting of East Leake Community Care Association at St Mary’s Hall, and who were welcomed by chairman Mrs Maggie Gordon.

Members were told the Association funds were in a healthy state and that the accounts had been audited.

The chairman presented her report for the year and said in her opinion the last year has been a good one and she thanked the Committee thanking those who have made it so.

The Group Organisers later gave their individual reports for the Carers’ Support Sitting Service, Befriending Group, Shopping Bus, Bereaved Friends Group and the Tea and Cakes Afternoon. The Voluntary Driver Car Scheme which is partially funded by Notts County Council, remains the back bone of the Association and many people contribute to the efficient running of the scheme. The Area Organisers, who take the bookings and payments make this possible. Also the Transport Book Holders who make numerous phone calls to find drivers to fulfil the journeys. A car scheme would not work without its drivers. The Association relies on a small band of committed people and many have been driving for us for a number of years. Some new drivers were recruited this year.

At the meeting East Leake parish council was thanked for their funding of the Shoppers’ Bus.

A new booklet has been published of edited minutes of the Association since 1973. This shows that that nothing changes much, volunteers are always needed, the car scheme is always under discussion and we move with the social changes that affect village life and so on into the 45th year.

The Chairrman closed by saying that volunteering should be enjoyable and from recent research we know it’s good for our own personal well being too.

An amendment to section five of the Association’s constitution was proposed and agreed. These have the effect that the Chairperson shall be elected at the first management Committee following the AGM and that the Chairperson can only be re-elected up to a period of five continuous years.

The meeting closed with refreshments served. DEFIBRILLATOR

CHEQUE. Notts County Council member for East Leake, Coun. Andy Brown, has presented a cheque for £950 to the East Leake playing fields committee to meet the cost of provision of a defibrillator on the external wall of the pavilion at the Costock Road site.

Thanks have been given to the County Councillor for the donation.

The committee have been given permission to remove or rectify a willow tree causing problems to the drains to the field. CONGRATULATIONS.

Chairman of East Leake Academy Governors John Dickens has, on behalf of the Governing Body, congratulated all those students who completed their exams over the summer term as a wonderful set of GCSE and AS/A-level results were achieved.

“Our students worked hard all year and thanks go to all the staff at ELA who supported them with their studies.”

Mr Dickens says they are keen to raise profile of the Governors within the Academy and highlight the work that they do.

In a message to parents he says the governors of a school have three main areas of responsibility, ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategy, holding the Principal to account for the performance of the school and its pupils, and overseeing financial performance and making sure money is well spent.

He says that the Academy is part of the Diverse Academies Learning Partnership (DALP) and governance is carried out through the Local Academy Board (LAB), operating under a scheme of delegation from the Trust Board.

Mr Dickens has been a governor at ELA since 2012 and Chair of Governors since 2014. Prior to retirement he was a Chartered Civil Engineer and after 11 years in professional practice he worked for over 30 Years at Loughborough University, progressing from lecturer to Professor of Engineering Education. He has lived in East Leake since 1981 and his three children all attended this Academy.

QUORN LOCAL HISTORY GROUP.

Thirty-five people (members and visitors) enjoyed a fascinating talk by Sue Templeman on the 82nd Airborne division who were camped in Quorn during World War Two.

As well as their very great contribution to the war effort, their presence in Quorn made a very deep and long-lasting memory on the local community.

Sue will be following up this talk with the viewing of a TV programme on the same subject some time early in the new year.

The Local History Group has formed a committee to organise its way forward and invites members of the Group to shape the direction and be involved in any aspect of research that they are interested in.

The next full meeting of the group (open to everyone) will be on Monday, November 20, at 7pm (venue to be confirmed).
