Garden was between the Mansions and Zenobia

-

A FEW weeks ago Looking Back asked readers for their memories of the Tudor Mansions in Loughborough, and one reader remembers playing in a garden next door to the former Woodgate building.

The Mansions that had been the former home of landowner Joseph Paget featured recently with the 25th anniversary of its demolition.

The Mansions were then later let to a group of Roman Catholic nuns invited to the town by Squire Ambrose Philips De Lisle.

David Brooks got in touch and said that he remembers playing at his mother’s friends who lived next door to the Mansions.

He said: “I was interested to read the article on Tudor Mansions in the Echo this week. My mother had friends, Mr and Mrs Whisker who at the time lived in a flat next door to Tudor Mansions (It was in the white building on the right of Tudor Mansions and was part of the Zenobia factory).

“I remember often playing in the garden at the back of the flat which I believe could well have been the original garden for Tudor Mansions.

“The garden was between Tudor Mansions and the Zenobia Factory and Southfields Road ran along one side. One of my memories is that there were two tree stumps in the garden which were huge, but then most things would appear to be big to a four/five year old!

“We were also able to see into the Zenobia Factory where their products could be seen.

“I seem to think that Mr and Mrs Whisker eventually moved to one of the houses in Bedford Square and then to a new house on Ashby Road.”

Do you have any memories of the Tudor Mansions or do you know more about the Mansions? Maybe you even have some old photos of them before they were demolished.
