Heavy defeat for 3rd XI
CANNOCK 3RD XI 5 LOUGHBOROUGH TOWN 3RD XI 0
THIS week saw the Town’s 3rd team make the journey west to the once great fortress of hockey that is Cannock Hockey Club, former national champions at various levels of youth and adult hockey.
A slow start from Loughborough with some questionable marking allowed Cannock to penetrate the defence early, giving them an early lead and the bulk for possession.
This was not a one sided game, however, with Loughborough executing some threatening counter attacks, building pressure well around the opposition D.
Notably Will Davison channelled the injured Pete Hayes to deliver some devastating balls to the back post. Despite the team’s best efforts however, the first half closed at 3-0 to Cannock.
The second half brought a new energy. Despite having no substitutes, the exceptionally conditioned team, clearly at the peak of physical performance, took the game to Cannock, renewing pressure and creating a number of heart stopping chances. Davison managed to hit the post twice, Oli Jephcott and Jono Griffiths continued to link up in the attack but this was not to be their day.
Several deflections, scraps in front of goal and balls sent inches wide of the post frustrated the team, as it seemed impossible to score.
Nevertheless, Loughborough did not give up, and continued to play end to end hockey as Ollie Taylor brought out a stunning performance in the second half.
James Young put in a strong performance throughout the game, offloading the ball early and helping to build the attack from all areas of the pitch. Perhaps the gentle guidance of the ever calm Vicecaptain Pete Hayes has paid off.
This was undoubtedly another frustrating fixture for the 3rd XI and the season has proved to be tough so far, but the team looks to next week in the hope of a turning up with a full squad and coming away with a win that will surely be deserved.
The 11 who made the trip to Cannock left nothing wanting on the pitch.
