Busy time for WI

-

PRESIDENT Valerie Greenhill welcomed members and a first time visitor to the November meeting of the

Thorpe Acre WI held at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall on Tuesday the 14th at 7.30pm.

As this was our annual meeting she also extended a warm welcome to the Tellers, Sylvia and Sheila, from Nanpantan WI who had come to oversee the election of our committee and president. There was only one birthday card to hand out this month and Irene was wished a happy one.

The feedback from the people who lunched at the Windmill was very favourable. The home-made food was very tasty and the staff equally friendly. Definitely one for the revisiting list.

The venue for November’s coffee morning will be at Goodliffe’s.

The first item in the diary for the New Year will be coffee at Centro.

Team A has made it to the second, knock out round of the Darts Competition and will be playing Barsby in November.

Now that winter’s here we’ll be throwing the darts in sheep skin gloves!

Our ‘Quizzers’ enjoyed their visit to Kegworth in October. The questions proved very taxing but the buffet supper was delicious. Those that are going to the dogs are expecting to be part of a winning experience.

Sue W, along with Ruth Green from WI House, has arranged a crochet workshop in January next year.

It was a real treat to see and listen to Lucy Worsley’s account of Jane Austen’s life. One member managed to get a signed copy of the book that forms the basis of her talk.

Other things on offer for ‘Culturerers’ include ‘Paddington 2’ and ‘ The Darkest Hour’. Carole had attended a preview of ‘ Wonder’ starring Julia Roberts and strongly recommended it to anyone who likes a ‘feel good’ film. Jacqui brought in some flyers and tickets for the ‘Go Ukulele Crazy’ evening that is scheduled for January 26th at the Thorpe Acre Church. She did a brisk trade at the end of the meeting and reminded everyone that this event is open to allcomers.

Now that it’s that time of the year, all the Christmas events are being finalised. We have collected a multitude of pompoms and there is more than enough to make our Christmas tree look magnificent. Volunteers will be there to put up the tree on Tuesday 28th November and Valerie reminded members that the Festival runs from 29th November to the 3rd December at the Parish Church and a visit is highly recommended.

All the menus for our Christmas lunch at Beaumanor Hall are now in and Carole can now go ahead book us in for a truly festive treat. On the same subject the Christmas Party board was circulated and Sue Y. was asked to make her super punch!

Members were reminded that The Carol Concert, hosted by Nanpantan WI, is at the Church of the Good Shepherd on 11th December.

Correspondence from NFWI and WI House was placed at the front of the table for perusal during tea and further information relating to the latter to could be found in County News. One item of note was the short list of resolutions for 2018.

As this was our annual meeting there was no speaker this month.

There was one change to the committee this year. Our treasured treasurer Jo H. was standing down after 24 years. She also stood down from the committee. Valerie thanked her for all her hard work over the years and presented her with a card and a plant for her garden.

The remainder of the committee were retained and the membership re-elected Valerie as our president.

The treasurer’s report and the secretary’s report were proposed and adopted.

Valerie’s president’s address showed how vibrant our institute had been over the last year and that we had welcomed four new members into our midst. She also reminded us that we had lost one of our most cherished members, Audrey.

The Tellers were thanked and Linda presented them with a small gift.

The remainder of the evening was taken up with that old favourite - a Beetle Drive! Within no time the hall resounded to dice rattling in cups, people adding up and questions such as “How many do you get for a feeler?”

The prize for the highest score went to Jane G.

The raffle prize and the flower arrangement were won by Celia DuRose and June Agar respectively. Refreshments were provided by members of the committee.

The competition for an ‘Autumn Arrangement’ was won by Sue Young, with Jo Seddon coming 2nd and Pauline Line, 3rd.

The Competition Cup for the highest number of points gained over the last year went to Sue Young.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 12th December, at 7.30pm at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall and will be our Christmas Party so who knows what will be happening!

However we will guarantee a lovely buffet and a happy time. And not forgetting Sue’s Punch! If you want to drop by and have a glass then please do so. You’ll be more than welcome.
