It’s tight at the top of Division Two as top three sides split by one point

ONLY a single point separates the top three sides after the opening five matches in the battle for top flight table tennis.

Early leaders Charnwood Aggressors have now been joined on 20 points by Hugglescot­e Hornets with Unicorn Curlews on 19 in Division Two of the Loughborou­gh and District League.

Gary Pitts was the star man for Hornets with a double as they edged to a 4-2 success at Students C. David Handley chipped in with one with Sean Henderson taking a singles for the home side.

Malcom Allsop and Guan Mel Zhang were in dominant form for Curlews as they returned from Draycott Dynamos with a maximum six points.

Charnwood Blockers remain at the foot of the table after they were whitewashe­d on their own table by Draycott Diamonds for whom Helena Dicken and Lucy Vernon remained unbeaten throughout the evening.

Charnwood Drivers were the big winners in last week’s Division Three fixtures as Paul Ducksbury and Berkeley Young reigned supreme in a 6-0 home victory over Students E.

David Green was in good form as Unicorn Dippers stepped up their challenge with a 4-2 success against Sawley Stars.

Martin Croft also picked up a useful singles win and the doubles were shared with John Brindley and Lee Brookes.

Tony Cook and Ian Kennedy both won a singles for Charnwood Choppers at Goons but were on the losing side as Barry Robinson’s double led the home side to a 4-2 scoreline.

Fourth Division leaders Sawley Tempted stretched their impressive lead to an imposing 12 points with a 6-0 drubbing of hosts Students G. Louise Watson and Linda Walshe clinched the singles with Julie Yeomans playing her part in the doubles.
