Gang Show programme from 1980
A FORMER SHEPSHED Scout leader has been in touch with Looking Back and brought in a programme from the gang show at Charnwood Theatre in 1980.
Peter Farmer, 83, from Longcliffe Road, Shepshed said that he was in the Scouts long enough to receive a special commendation medal, but that the gang show in 1980 was the only one that he was part of.
He said that all the groups from across the area including those from Loughborough, Mountsorrel and Shepshed took part in the show.
Mr Farmer said: “I used to love Scouting, what I can remember from the gang show is that all of our group had to sing in the chorus, and I took part in another piece where I stood on the stage and there were some scouts sitting around me, reminiscing about what it was like when we used to camp and our memories of it.”
Speaking about the theatre he said: “The Charnwood Theatre, it was like an air raid shelter underneath the stage, that was where I remember getting changed but I bet it isn’t like that anymore!”
Mr Farmer said that he joined the Scouts in 1946 and that his first big camp was at Belvoir Castle near Grantham.
He said that he loved being a Scout and a Scout leader, and said that he had been a member of the group off and on for most of his life.
