BISHOP BEVERIDGE CLUB NEWS. Today, Wednesday, 6 December, is our next Bingo session and starts at 2.30pm. Cost is £2 members, £2.50 visitors, who are most welcome. Prizes and raffle included.

Our Annual Carol Concert is being held on Wednesday, 13 December starting at 2.30pm. Tea and Mincepies will be served. The Baptist Minister is leading the service for us. All members welcome.

On Monday, 18 December the Monday Movie will be ‘My Cousin Rachel’, a modern remake of the famous 1952 film. A young Englishman plots revenge against his late cousin’s mysterious, beautiful wife, believing her responsibl­e for his death. But his feelings become complicate­d as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms. Starting at 2pm, doors open at 1.30pm, cost to visitors is £4.50, members £4 and includes tea and cake.

We still have a few places on the coach for our visit to York and the Christmas Street Market will be on Monday, 11 December. Cost to members is (coach only) £15, nonmembers £17. We will leave Sileby at 8am and Barrow pickups shortly afterwards.

All very welcome, you do not have to be a member or live in Barrow. We will have a comfort stop both ways. Call Joyce 01509 414519 to book. Reminder that payment is still due from some.

On Boxing Day we will be open to all serving coffee and toasted tea cakes. 10am – 12noon and free. The full list of coach outings for 2018 are in the latest Newsletter and on the Notice Board outside the Club.

The quarterly Newsletter is also in the Library. The Beetle Drivewas only attended by a few people, but was thoroughly enjoyed and there are plans to hold another one in the Spring when we hope that we will be better supported. Sylvia would like to hear from anyone who is willing to help out at our monthly Friday Lunch Club. For details please telephone 01509 413565. This would only be for twice a year.

Barrow community library have Saturday stories weekly at 10.30am - 11am for children 7 and under. £1 donation suggested. Refreshmen­ts available.

THANK YOU. Heather and Jemma would like to thank everyone who supported or attended our craft fair this year, we raised £710, which will be divided equally between Crohn’s And Colitis UK and I A (ileostomy group).

This is the 5th year that we have hosted the event and really do appreciate people donating their time and money to help us support these two worthy charities.

WHIST CLUB. The Whist Club held each Thursday afternoon at the Bishop Beveridge Club between 2pm - 4pm is looking for new members due to dwindling numbers.

This is separate from the Bishop Beveridge club, and run by a number of individual­s. No membership is required, just a keen interest. Just turn up, telephone (01509) 414519, for informatio­n. This club has been running for many years.

BARROW REMEMBERS 1918 – 2018. In 2018 Barrow Parish Council will lay a wreath of poppies on the grave of every one of the 71 young men, from this Parish, who lost their lives in the Great War and would like to invite anyone interested in participat­ing to attend a briefing to be held at the parish council office on either Thursday, 7 December from 6pm – 7pm or Saturday, 9 December between 10am – 12 noon.

RHYME TIME. On Friday, 8 December, come along to Rhyme Time at 10:30am in Barrow library.

BARROW UPON SOAR TWINNING ASSOCIATIO­N. Have you ever wondered what locally produced wine would taste like? For example, King Richard which has a flavour of soft, ripe grapefruit and melon with a hint of ginger and a touch of honey. Or, Fearless which has a hint of fennel and elderflowe­r.

Also, King Henry which has a deep dark red colour with a flavour of plum and black cherry with a hint of black pepper. What could be better than sampling these wines and others such as Spirit of Freedom and Noble Purpose? The Twinning Associatio­n are holding such event on Friday, December 8 at the Bishop Beveridge Club, starting at 7.30pm.

The wines will be presented by Rothley Vineyard and it sounds like fun will be had by all. The tickets are just £12 which includes a selection of wine and accompanim­ents and a Lucky Draw Prize Ticket. Further informatio­n and tickets from Jim Fuller on 01509 415226.

CHRISTMAS BANQUET AT THE METHODIST CHURCH. There is no Luncheon Club next Friday. Instead, people are invited to join in the Christmas Banquet which is taking place on Sunday, December 10, at 12 noon. Booking is essential.

YORK COACH TRIP. There are a few places left on the Coach trip to York. The Bishop Beveridge Club day visit is on Monday, 11 December when the Christmas Street Market will be in full swing.

If you wish to go, the booking list is in the club now. Cost to members is (coach only) £15, non-members £17. We will be leaving Sileby at 8am and Barrow pickups shortly afterwards. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Barrow W I is meeting in the Conservati­ve Club, assembly rooms on Wednesday, December 13, at 7.30pm. Felicity Austin will be speaking about Christmas during World War II. All are welcome.

RUMMAGE SALE. On Saturday, 16 December, The Clock Club is holding a rummage sale in aid of Rainbows, from 10am – 11.30am at the Bishop Beveridge club.

BUSCA’S CHRISTMAS BALLROOM DANCE. Come on all you followers of “Strictly” – why not join us at this year’s Christmas Ballroom Dance on Saturday, December 23.

It is hosted by the ever popular C&J Sound who will make sure you have a great night out in this run-up to Christmas. The dance is at Humphrey Perkins Community Centre on Cotes Road, LE12 8JU.

Dancing starts at 7.30pm and ends at 11pm. Tickets cost just £15 including a delicious two course seasonal buffet. You can get them from the Paper Shop or on line from www.busca.org.uk by Paypal or by ringing Mike Collins on 413649.

You don’t have to be an expert dancer! There is plenty for everybody – ballroom, sequence, Latin, modern, rock’n roll; if C&J haven’t played your favourite, you can put in your request.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE. Barrow Christmas Fayre was held on Saturday (December 2)

In Holy Trinity Church there was a display of 86 Christmas trees installed by groups/ businesses/organisati­ons from the village.

The standard was, as ever, extraordin­arily high showing exemplary levels of imaginatio­n and creativity.

There were also an array of stalls and games for people to enjoy before the switching on of the Christmas lights at 5pm.
