Photo lectures

COLIN Machin and Mandy Sherrington, long-standing members of Sileby Photographic Society, entertained their colleagues at the meeting held on Monday, November 27.

Colin opened the batting with an informed lecture on the technicalities of what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ within the camera itself to enable it to produce an actual image or picture on the click of a button.

This was extremely well presented and produced in Colin’s inimitable style and, whilst it went way over the head of the author of this article in particular, those of higher intellect appreciated its contents and learned valuable information. A lot of work had gone into its preparation and his facts and figures stood up to scrutiny.

After the refreshment break, it was Mandy’s turn to take centre stage, and she chose to present digital images captured on camera whilst on a short visit to Camber Sands, East Sussex and the surrounding area earlier in the year.

Mandy has always had a keen eye for shapes, colours and unusual patterns and there seemed to be ample material available on the beaches and elsewhere upon which to work. The old wooden fishing boats, upturned on their keel, many of which lay unloved, untended and abandoned to rot on the shingle, allowed for excellent pictures, with looters long since gone having taken their fill.

Brightly coloured fishermen’s huts, old and new lighthouses, and shapes created in the sand by a disappearing tide were also well captured on camera as were the sand dunes and coloured pebbles on the shingle beaches.

St. Thomas â Becket church, tucked away in a corner of East Sussex, photographed well, and the reflections created in the nearby waters were quite superb.

Pete Smith had the honour of thanking both Colin and Mandy for their presentations, each fascinating in their own way.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, 11th December when visiting lecturer, Chris Upton, ARPS, will present digital images under the title ‘Incredible India’.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8.00pm, and are held at Sileby Community Centre. Further information can be obtained from the Society’s website, www.silebyps.org.uk
