Avocets secure whitewash win to sit joint top of Division One with Draycott Donkeys

-

THERE’S no separating the top two sides after the first six matches in the Loughborough and District Table Tennis League.

Draycott Donkeys and Unicorn Avocets are locked together at the summit of Division One with 26 points each after Avocets took a maximum six points from bottom placed club mates Unicorn Bitters.

Dave Roche and Peter Haluska dropped just three games between them as they saw off Bo Zhang and Xujin Bao with relative comfort.

The only other side with a realistic prospect of upsetting a two-horse race are champions Students A who had to work much harder to win at Hugglescote Hares.

Alastair Hawthorn was in good form for the hosts, defeating both Alex Jackson and Simone Broersen in four games.

Jackson kept Students in the hunt with a hard-fought 11-7 success over Clive Stretton in the fifth game but it was the doubles combination of Jackson and Broersen that proved the difference as the visitors triumphed 4-2.

Tony Geanta produced a man of the match display as Charnwood Aggressors edged back in front in the Division Two title race by taking five points against Unicorn Curlews.

He defeated Xujin Bao and Guan Mei Zhang as well as aiding Ron Forster to two more victorious in the doubles.

Hugglescote Hornets are just a point adrift of Aggressors after winning 4-2 at Draycott Dynamos.

Dan Jones and David Handley both won a singles and dominated the doubles but a fine performance by Taylor Pearson limited the damage for the hosts.

Students C moved into third spot by whitewashing Draycott Diamonds. Both Helena Dicken and Lucy Vernon took a set apiece to a fifth game but Sean Henderson and Tom Davey remained unbeaten.

Division Three is proving a very open affair with Hugglescote Hawks leading the way after the opening seven matches but Unicorn Dippers and Charnwood Drivers just one point and two points behind respectively.

Goons, who have a game in hand, could still join the leading pack.

Division Four, however, is already a battle for second place with Unicorn Egrets leading Students G by three points. Neither is likely to catch Sawley Tempted who have a massive 12-point advantage.
