A NEW desserts company has moved into Shepshed and has opened in the former newsagents of much loved Shepshed stalwart Winnie Elliot.

Billionaire Desserts opened in Charnwood Road on Monday, December 11 and had a very special first customer, as the Mayor of Charnwood, Coun Pauline Ranson officially opened the store.

Four friends from Loughborough - Bittu Dey, Mahdi Eskandari, Habib Chowdhury and Nassir Uddin - who all have a sweet tooth - decided to open the store after they were fed up of travelling to different cities and towns in search of a sweet treat.

Bittu told the Echo: “The origins came from enjoying each other’s company eating in different dessert parlours.

“The downside was travelling to different cities and towns just for the search of a sweet spot.

“We took matters into our own hands and now we are proud to announce Billionaire Desserts, welcome to all as we know “everyone has a sweet spot”.

“We understand the frustrations of travelling miles and miles seeking to quench your thirst. Shepshed thrives on delightful takeaways. Which is why placing Billionaire Desserts in the heart of the town equals imagination and ingenuity.

“Our long-term ambition is to work with due diligence to eventually allow ourselves to extend our branch and become a franchise.

“We understand the complexities of maintaining customer needs and consistently delivering desserts of high quality. But that is exactly what we promise. “Our journey begins now.” The restaurant serves a number of cakes, sweets and desserts, from waffles and ice cream to mocktails, sundaes and cookie dough.

The desserts parlour had previously been the newsagents of Winnie Elliott, who many Shepshed residents will surely have fond memories of.

Winnie started working at her uncle Arthur’s newsagent shop at the age of 14 after leaving school, and when her uncle Arthur was forced to pack up due to ill health, a 20-year-old Winnie was left to hold the fort.

She sadly passed away in 2015 after serving generation after generation for 74 years, waking up at 4am every morning, Monday to Saturday, and she became something of a local celebrity after being asked to officially open the first Shepshed Show in 2014.
