However his overall package fell to £288,000 due to reduced pension contributions. The university, ranked 30th in the Good University guide for 2018, had an average staff salary of £37,500.

A Loughborough University spokesman said: “Loughborough University operates a common approach for all staff salaries based on the same performance and development review (PDR) process.

“The increase in the vice-chancellor’s salary is therefore performance-related.

“The increase does not exceed that available to other high performing staff through the PDR scheme.

“The vice-chancellor’s pay is in the third lowest quartile of the sector despite Loughborough having risen into the top-ten of UK universities.”
