Our wedding reception at the Tudor Mansions

-

“WE HAD our wedding reception in the Tudor Mansions.”

The famous Woodgate Mansions have stirred up quite a bit of interest from Looking Back readers in recent weeks, and the former home of well-known landowner Joseph Paget was the venue for Gwen Adlard’s wedding reception in 1942.

Mrs Adlard (nee Cichener) 92, of Frederick Street, Loughborough said that she held the party in the grounds of the Mansions.

She said: “I do remember that it was a lovely place, and it had a lovely garden at the back.

“I remember a rumour that it used to be haunted.” Gwen said that she remembered that because she got married during World War Two it was in the time of rationing, and that although she and husband - George Scott Adlard - had a wedding cake, there was no icing on it.

She said that the reception buffet consisted of a lot of fruit and vegetables because her friend was a gardener and that they catered for around 40 guests.

Gwen said that Ruby’s chip shop was across the road from the Tudor Mansions - behind the back of the Empire Cinema and added that Ruby Hall, who owned the shop, would often call her home telephone when they first became popular.... but it wasn’t to speak to Gwen.

She said that her next door neighbour was a good friend of Ruby’s but because she didn’t have her own telephone, Ruby would call Gwen and she would then have to go and get her neighbour to tell her that Ruby was on the phone and that she needed her.

• Do you have any of your own memories of the Tudor Mansions in Woodgate?

Or Maybe you remember Ruby or Ruby’s chip shop?
