LYE TOWN 2 QUORN 1 THE first game of the New Year saw a disappointing result at Lye Town, bringing to an end Quorn’s six match unbeaten run.

Rob Mulonga withdrew through illness before the kick off and Quorn started the game with three changes from the Rocester game, Darious Darkin, Joseph Haines and Sean Williams all returned to the staring 11 with, George Bowerman and Nathan Jackson on the bench.

On a difficult surface, it was no surprise that the home side started the brighter of the two sides, but the opening 20 minutes yielded nothing for either side in terms of real chances.

Lye had a couple of wayward strikes ending promising attacks but in the 21st minute they took the lead, a defensive mix up presenting an easy finish for the opening goal. Quorn responded but were unable to break down a stubborn home rear-guard.

The second half was barely a minute old when Lye doubled their advantage, catching Quorn cold. The home side continued to play with a much better tempo than the visitors but without really threatening to add to the score line.

Quorn improved with the triple introduction of Ryan Evans, Bowerman and Jackson after 55 minutes and for the first time in the game began to threaten the home defence.

Quorn were caught on the break but a superb tackle by Daniel Chapman rescued a difficult situation. Sean Williams crossed for Nathan Dale to head narrowly over the bar with Quorn’s best chance in the game. Williams then did well to side step two challenges before his effort from the edge of the box brushed the top of the bar.

Soon after, Williams floating a corner over and Chapman headed against the crossbar from 12 yards with the keeper beaten.

This was more like it from Quorn and with just under 20 minutes to go they got a foothold in the game, Bowerman did well on the right and his cross fell to Evans, who fired home off the inside of the post. Quorn were close to a leveller soon after, Bowerman rounded the keeper after a great through ball by Dominic Brennan but from the tightest of angles was denied by the width of the post.

Quorn continued to press for the equaliser and looked to have rescued a point with a terrific 25-yard effort from Williams but somehow it was kept out and the referee blew for full time.

Quorn were not firing on all cylinders and despite the late surge by the visitors, the home side hung on for a well deserved three points.
