HOLOCAUST Memorial Day is once again being marked with a special event in Loughborough.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been marked in the town since its inception as a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom in 2001.

Always held on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945, it is dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in the Holocaust under Nazi persecution, and in subsequent genocides.

In Loughborough however, a granite stone in Queen’s Park, bears a plaque inscribed with the words: “In memory of the victims of genocide in all times and all places” recognising that these terrible cruelties have happened throughout human history.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is The Power of Words.

One of the organisers of the event said: “We are deluged with words and information these days and have a responsibility to choose carefully how we let the views of others, expressed through words, influence us. We can ourselves choose to use the power of words for good.”

The public memorial event will take place this year at noon on Saturday, January 27, by the bandstand in Queen’s Park.

A few short readings will be fol- lowed by the Act of Commitment read by the Mayor and the opportunity for everyone present to lay a pebble on the memorial stone.

All people are welcome and encouraged to attend.
