Costock

GOOD ONE FOR ST GILES’. The year 2017 was a good one for Costock St Giles’ Church.

Churchwardens Gill Starmer and Kath Owen say the work on the roof is almost complete - they are awaiting the arrival of some ridge tiles. A cupboard for the vestry has been provided, and they are seeking information about bringing running water into the building, financed by the bequest from Geoffrey Hallam.

The wardens say they held a very successful Benefice Service earlier in the year and their recent coffee morning raised £470. They give a big ‘ Thank you’ to all who have helped and all who have supported them throughout the year.

“2018 will no doubt be equally busy and rewarding. We look forward to your continuing support,” say Gill and Cath.

Inspired by fiddle traditions from England and across the world, at the heart of Alma’s music is the joyful sound of fiddles playing in harmony nurtured by the sensitive and driving accompaniment of guitar.

Alma’s distinctive approach to the gems of each tradition result in beautiful and exciting new arrangements as each member of Alma brings their own individual style and influences to the band that tantalise and excite the audience.

QUORN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. A fresh start for the New Year with some new members and a new venue. Plans for future events and outings have been finalised and items organised by HQ such as Computer training and Table Tennis have been noted!

Heather Jacks, winner of the Great British Sewing Bee in 2014 (the first one to be aired) was the speaker.

When she first saw the proposed format she thought it was a silly idea for a programme! However, it did look interesting, so she filled in the seven-page questionnaire and thought no more about it.

She was amazed to hear back from the programme and she related the traumas of going through the lengthy selection process for it (even a psychology test).

She was quizzed on her knowledge of sewing terms and after many more interviews, was finally selected to take part.

She found the times given for making the garments were inadequate and so Heather’s strategy was to keep everything simple and Quorn try to choose materials that she felt would be easy to sew.

Obviously her strategy worked as she won the show! She liked Claudia Winkleman very much, saying what a kind lady she was.

Heather was a lively and amusing speaker and gave us an insight into what a protracted business it is to actually put a programme on the Television.

She had brought along garments she had made on the show and the ladies were very interested in looking at them and asking questions.

For the next meeting in February we shall be having a visit from the Stanford Hall Military Rehabilitation Centre.
