Herbert Putt passes away at the age of 97

WELL known local businessma­n Herbert Putt, has died aged 97. He passed away on Monday, January 15.

After leaving school Herbert joined his brother Harold in his father Joseph’s painting and decorating business in Nottingham Road.

Putt’s has a long history in the town. It was founded by Joseph in 1911 and trading was carried out for a number of years from the Manor House in Sparrow Hill before moving to the present site in 1928.

At the outbreak of World War Two while Harold joined the Army Fire Service, Herbert joined the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Mechanic.

He was posted to aerodromes at Castle Donington, Wymeswold and Melton Mowbray and worked on iconic aircraft such as Hurricanes, Spitfires and Lancasters

After the war the two brothers returned to working with Joseph, re-opening the Nottingham Road shop in the early 1950s.

The shop soon gained a good reputation and although still open at present, is due to close in the next few weeks.

Herbert married Peggy in 1947 and she too joined the family business. Peggy passed away in 2011.

In his earlier years Herbert was a keen swimmer, badminton and billiards player. In his later years he took up golf.

He was also keen to follow the fortunes of Leicester City and football and cricket in general

Herbert leaves behind son David, daughter-in-law Erica and grandson Joseph and his wife Sarah.

David said: “He was a true gentleman and we’ve received lots of cards and messages which shows just how much he was loved.”
