Impressive home win for Students

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY FC 4

LONG EATON 1 AFTER A bad run of six defeats in the Midland Football League, Loughborough Uni FC returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Long Eaton at Holywell Park.

It was a thoroughly deserved win with all the goals coming in the first half in front of another good crowd of over 150.

Cameron Gordon went close to putting the Scholars ahead when he headed a fine cross from Moran wide of the posts but soon afterwards it was Long Eaton who went close when Students ‘keeper Jake Hilton’s poor clearance was seized upon by Andy Todd but the keeper redeemed himself by getting back into the goal and tipped the ball over for an unproductive corner.

Then the Students had a fine spell scoring twice in the space of seven minutes. Firstly the impressive Luke Moran put Gordon through and he raced away to slot the ball under the advancing ‘keeper and the goal certainly lifted the Students confidence.

The second goal was a beauty with Matty Crooks cutting in from the left before curling a superb shot past the visiting keeper into the far corner of the net.

It was all action stuff and Long Eaton, who have been in much improved form in recent weeks, reduced the arrears with superb header from Shaun Rickford.

It could have signalled a revival but the Students didn’t lose heart and soon restored their two goal advantage with Cameron Gordon getting his second of the game when he was again set-up by Moran and tapped in the Scholars third.

Almost on the stroke of halftime the Scholars scored a fourth; this time central defender Joel Bonner coming up and heading home a Ben Last corner and the Students deserved the ovation they were given as the teams went off for the interval.

Long Eaton made a bold move at the outset of the second half by sending on three substitutes in a bid to change the flow of the game but paid the price when within a few minutes when one of the subs, Will Coots was injured and could play no further part in the game leaving the visitors with just 10 men.

The second half didn’t live up to the first but in fairness to Long Eaton they tried to get some consolation but the Students were giving nothing away. The game petered out but that won’t worry the Uni who needed this result and will be hoping players such as Alex Read and Joe Boachie will soon return to action and give them just a bit more fire power.

This week the Students face a long trip to Shawbury who are now playing in Ludlow but at least this win may have just given the Scholars the incentive to pick up more points.
