Charnwood Choppers and Charnwood Blockers both make the semi finals of Handicap Cup

-

THE POSSIBILITY of an all-Charnwood final is still alive going into this week’s semi-finals of the Loughborough and District Table Tennis League’s Handicap Cup.

Two of the three Charnwood sides were successful in last week’s quarter finals and Choppers and Blockers also managed to avoid each other in the draw for the last four.

Division Three side Choppers were the most convincing winners as they demolished Unicorn Bitterns by 334 points to 249.

Meanwhile Blockers put their Second Division struggles behind them as they saw off Draycott Dynamos 337 to 317.

Charnwood Drivers narrowly failed to make it a hat trick for the Quorn-based club as they were defeated by 17 points – the closest tie of the round – at Hugglescote Hornets. The final score was 345 to 328.

Second Division leaders Unicorn Curlews are the other side still in the competition after defeating visitors Hugglescote Hawks by 292 points to 269.

This week’s games see Charnwood Blockers looking to reverse current league form at home to Unicorn Curlews whilst Choppers aim to keep the Third Division flag flying at Hugglescote Hornets.

Meanwhile in Division Three, Sawley Stars took advantage of the cup break to catch up on their league programme with two trips to Loughborough University in successive nights.

Monday saw the league’s newcomers pick up a second successive win as they beat bottom side Students E 6-4 with John Brindley winning two and Lee Brookes following up his first singles success of the previous week with one.

But roles were reversed 24 hours later when Tom Davey’s double – including an 11-9 success over Brindley in the fifth – helped Students D win 4-2.
