Tag rugby festival is hailed as a great success

-

LEICESTER Tigers and The Nottingham Building Society hosted a tag rugby festival for six primary schools at Loughborough College last week.

A total of 120 children from the six schools took part including Rendell Primary, Hathern Primary, Holywell Primary, Burton on the Wolds Primary, St Bartholomew’s in Quorn and Broom Leys Primary of Coalville. .

With each school bringing two teams, the 12 teams played in a round robin tournament before being presented with Leicester Tigers and The Nottingham branded t-shirt and goody bag.

Now in its third year, the tag programme aims to visit multiple primary schools around the county introducing the non-contact variation of the game. Leicester Tigers rugby development officers visited eight schools in total during the last school term before Christmas delivering five weeks of professional tag rugby coaching.

This culminated in the programme’s second tag festival of this season last week which gave pupils the chance to show off the skills they had learnt and for many was the first time they’d ever played competitive rugby.

Dom Owen, Tigers rugby development officer who runs part of the programme said “Overall the day was a great success and we would like to say thank you to all involved.

“A thanks to the staff at the schools for supporting the initiative, Loughborough College for being fantastic hosts, The Nottingham staff for joining in the fun and most importantly the children who have embraced the fun and challenge tag rugby has given them.”
