Won the Sea Around Us can-can competition

-

AFTER seeing photos of the Tudor Mansions in Loughborough and the famous themed pub the Sea Around Us, a Looking Back reader has written to the Echo with her memories of both places - including winning a can-can dancing competition and her best friend who lived on the top flat of the historic Loughborough building.

Mrs Molly Smith, 88, of Park Court, Loughborough said that her best friend - Vera Isaacs - used to live in the top flat of the Tudor Mansions in Churchgate.

The mansions have featured several times in Looking Back in the last few months, and were the site of Rosminian nuns, and were also owned by famous Loughborough landowner Joseph Paget.

Molly said that Vera used to live with her mum, her sister, and her sister’s husband and that she often visited the flat.

She said that Vera’s sister’s husband was the manager of the Odeon cinema “I used to love seeing him impeccably dressed in the foyer greeting everyone. Those were the days.”

She said that her friend Vera worked at Wrights, which was in Market Street, while she worked at the offices at Herbert Morris.

In the 1960s and 70s the The Sea Around Us pub on New Ashby Road was one of Loughborough’s first themed pubs, and was well known for its huge ballroom and the dances that used to take place there.

Everything in the pub was based around the sea, and had a number of themed items with everything from Jamaican coral reef to hand painted mosaics and a bar in the shape of a boat.

Molly said that she used to go to the pub every week for dancing and said that she had some “very happy times there.

One of her most fond memories was when she won the can-can dance competition and said: “I had to carry the prize home which was a crate of beer!”
