Facelift begins at Unity House
WORK is underway on a facelift for Unity House - the headquarters of the Loughborough Labour Party.
The project, financed by donations from individuals and local businesses is expected to take four weeks to complete and is being carried out by LDC Heritage Restoration.
Roger Smith from the Loughborough Labour Party said: “Unity House in Fennel Street has been the headquarters of Loughborough Labour Party since 1947. The building was originally a medical aid centre and was erected in the late 1880’s. The style is similar in design to the Fearon Hall but the stonework has considerably deteriorated over the years as a result of pollution.
“The building represents part of Loughborough’s architectural heritage and a renovation is underway.
“The main aim is to repair the crumbling sandstone and this will cause some disruption to pedestrians using Fennel Street over a period of about four weeks for which the Labour Party apologises but after restoration the street scene in the Conservation Area should be considerably enhanced.”
The frontage restoration is part of a series of events marking the centenary of the foundation of Loughborough Labour Party in 1918. Later in the year the Labour party intends to publish a history of the local party, which will be available to the public and exhibitions of historical documents will be on display in the renovated Unity House.
