Uni FC are denied by last gasp goal

TOTAL MOTION MIDLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE LOUGHBOROUGH UNI FC 0 SPORTING KHALSA 1

A GOAL in the first minute of added time cost Loughborough Uni FC what would have been a deserved point against title chasing Sporting Khalsa.

After the recent spate of postponements due to the weather the Students were back in action last Saturday against the West Midland high flyers Sporting Khalsa. It was a game in which the Uni created few chances but put up a spirited defensive display that surely merited some reward.

There can be no doubting Khalsa created the better chances but the Students stood their ground against a somewhat physical side who in the early stages seemed to be taking it turns to commit fouls or stop any flow the Uni wanted to get into the game. Had the referee not been quite so lenient a few more names would have gone into his notebook.

Jake King in the Scholars goal dealt with most of what came his way especially from set pieces where the visitors looked to put the Uni under pressure. The Students didn’t really muster a genuine effort in the first half although Alex Read fired in a free kick right on halftime but it sailed just over the uprights.

Loughborough came more into the game in the second half and following one superb run by Ben Last they looked as if they could break the deadlock but just when he was ready to fire home the visiting keeper was on him to block his effort.

Khalsa were forced to play the final 20 minutes with ten men when Woodhouse was sent off after receiving his second yellow card but they continued to pressure the Students rearguard. Johnson had a shot cleared off the line by the Scholars and just when it seemed the Uni had earned a point they conceded right at the death. They gave away two free kicks in quick succession and although they managed to defend the first they then gave away another right in the edge of the box but the defensive wall left one yawning gap which was all Mykel Beckley required and he fired home right through gaping hole to win the spoils for his side.

The Scholars shouldn’t be downhearted because they performed admirably against a strong side. This Saturday they are at home again with Boldmere St. Michaels being the visitors.
