CANDLES. Diseworth Parish Church hope that will be lots of lit candles burning there on Mothering Sunday March 11.

This year on that special day they will be running an event called ‘Hold a Candle for Her’ and explain that everyone is invited to give the name of a special woman who is or has been important to them.

The number of names will be represented by tea-light candles and the names will be displayed around the church.

There will be a request for a small donation for each name, with that money going towards the church building repair fund.

On Mothering Sunday there will be a service in the church at 9.30am to which all are welcome, and the church will remain open during the day for people to visit.

HERITAGE AGM. The annual general meeting of Diseworth Heritage Centre will be held on Sunday February 25, with it starting at 4pm and will be held in the main hall of the Centre. Everyone will be welcome to join in.

SCHOOL. Young pupils at Diseworth village school have good reason to be very happy and excited about the topics they have to interest them.

The Reception section children have a topic based on the story book of ‘Elmer’, where they will look at colours and incorporate the story in all areas of their learning.

In Class 2 (KS1), their topic is ‘Chocolate’ where they will be learning about how chocolate is made, its history, -- and no doubt some actual tasting could be involved. The children will also be enjoying the famous Roald Dahl’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

In Class 3 (KS2), they will be learning all about World War One – which ended 100 years ago0 this coming November -- mainly focussing on the Homefront and what life would have been like during the war.

For the beginning of the topic, the children researched how the war began and made posters to explain their findings.

WOMEN’S PRAYER. The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer will take place at the Methodist Church in Long Whatton on Friday, March 2, at 7.30pm.

The service has been prepared by the Christian women of Suriname and is entitled “All God’s Creation is Very Good!”

All around the world, throughout the day, thousands of Christians will meet in small or large groups to pray for Suriname. Men, women and young people are very welcome. Come and join the united service here.

SERVICE. The monthly United Service in Long Whatton will be on Sunday, March 4, at the Methodist Church, starting at 10.30am. Rev Jill Bryant will be conducting the service. All are very welcome. Refreshments will be served afterwards with time to chat.

The event will as usual be held in the village hall and takes place on Friday and Saturday this week, February 23 and 24.

Tickets for the Saturday sold out on the day they first became available before Christmas and Hall chairman David Bamford told the Echo this week there was only a handful available for the Friday.

The play, Blue Murder, is scripted, produced and acted by Diseworth residents and offers an evening of fun and as the audience you work out with your team ‘whodunit’.
