Squadron commanders Doug Doughty and Ken Stockwell spotted

-

A FORMER squadron commander of Loughborough Air Training Cadets (ATC) has been in contact after seeing the old 1959 photo in Looking Back which had been sent in by Keith Tyler.

John Seymour who joined the Loughborough squadron as a cadet aged 13 in 1962 said that he recognised some people in the photo.

John said that the person sitting in the centre of the front row was Doug Doughty who was squadron commander at the time and to the left of Doug was Ken Stockwell, who later became squadron commander.

He also added that the person seated on the far left was named Fitchett.

John said that he believed Doug Doughty had been a bomber navigator during World War Two and that both he and Ken were teachers at Garendon High School and that’s how many youngsters from the town were recruited.

John eventually became squadron commander at Loughborough himself.

Dave Dunkerley, of Leconfield Road, Loughborough, also contacted us identifying Doug Doughty, who was his father-in-law and Ken Stockwell.

He said: “The squadron was run by my father-in-law, F/Lt. Doug Doughty. He is seated in the centre (5th left). On his right is Ken Stockwell. They both wear the brevet of Air Gunner.

“Ken flew in the Fairey Swordfish, a biplane equipped with a torpedo for naval warfare. Doug flew in the Blen- heim bomber and was awarded the DFM whilst still a sergeant, later gaining a commission to Flight Lieutenant. To Doug’s left is his brother, Les. To Les’s left is Stan Jarvis.”
