Charnwood Aggressors on target for promotion to the top flight after 4-2 win

-

THE keenly-contested fight for promotion to the top flight of the Loughborough and District Table Tennis League has shifted in the favour of Charnwood Aggressors.

They moved into a three-point lead at the top after last week’s fixtures although club mates Charnwood Blockers were in no mood do them a favour.

A clash between sides at opposite ends of Division Two highlighted its competitive nature as Aggressors were made to work hard to win 4-2.

Adrian Stevenson gave Blockers an excellent start by becoming only the second player this season to get the better of Chris Woodward in four games.

Stevenson and Chris Barlow also took the first doubles 11-8 in the fifth only for in-form Tony Geanta to do most to ensure normal service was restored.

He won both singles and with Woodward chipping in with one, Aggressors clinched victory with a revenge success in the second doubles.

The other key match of the week also turned out in Charnwood’s favour as their promotion rivals Draycott Diamonds and Unicorn Curlews shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Helena Dicken put Diamonds within reach of a vital victory by winning both her singles but the doubles partnership of Malcolm Allsop and Xujin Bao ensured the night ended all square.

After a slow start to the season, Charnwood Choppers have roared back into title contention in Division Three.

Their latest 6-0 demolition of bottom side Students E leaves them a tantalising two points adrift of leaders Hugglescote Hawks and level with Unicorn Dippers with four matches left.

Tony Cook and Eric Baker did the damage as Choppers picked up their latest success.
