Invitation to join weekly organic gardening sessions

-

THE Local Community Allotment is starting the 2018 growing season by welcoming new members to join in with weekly organic gardening sessions. Transition Loughborough holds the free sessions at its allotments on King George Road (LE11 2PA) every Wednesday from 5.30pm throughout the growing season.

The sessions are free and open to anyone who wants to come to share ideas, experiences and growing hints and tips in a friendly group.

Complete beginners and experienced gardeners are both welcome – an ideal opportunity to learn from each other.

The allotment has been established a few years ago and includes raised beds for those who find it difficult to bend, a crop rotation area for vegetable gardening, a composting area, a brook and wildlife area, a ‘nectar bar’ with perennial flowers and herbs to attract bees and other pollinators, and a soft fruit area. There is even a composting toilet in case you get caught short whilst weeding!

Martha Worsching, a member of Transition Loughborough and a regular at the allotment sessions, said: “We would love to meet new people who are enthusiastic about gardening.

“Growing food locally is one of the aims of Transition Loughborough as it helps make our community more resilient in the face of various environmental challenges.

“Our allotment provides a lovely space where people can garden together. Whether you’re on an allotment waiting list, don’t have your own garden, or would like to garden with others in a friendly relaxed environment, everyone is welcome.”

The group also holds regular weekend workshops and an endof-season harvest celebration.

The site is accessed from King George Road – go through the wooden gate at the bend of the road and then down the track along the brook on the right hand side.
