Weekend closure of a stretch of M1

MOTORISTS are being warned of “significant congestion” when a stretch of the M1 around Kegworth is closed to traffic for a weekend.

From Friday, May 11, at 10pm on the southbound carriageway and midnight northbound, until Sunday, May 13, at 3pm, the section of the M1 between Junction 23A and Junction 24 will be closed to all traffic.

This is to enable two separate pro- jects to happen.

The Kegworth Bypass bridge will be launched over the motorway, south of Ashby Road bridge, as part of a major infrastructure construction development at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, currently being constructed near East Midlands Airport.

Separately - and in order to avoid another full closure of the motorway - Highways England will be taking the opportunity to carry out essential bridge waterproofing south of J23A.

There will be a traffic diversion route along the A453 during the weekend closure of the section of the motorway.

A spokesperson for SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway said: “As the M1 is one of the UK’s busiest motorways, we expect significant congestion and delays along this diversion route and the motorway, therefore we advise drivers avoid this area if possible and allow for extra time for their journey – in particular if travelling to East Midlands Airport.”

Please check www.slp-emg.com for more information.

SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway is a 700-acre ‘inland port’ which combines links to the M1 and East Midlands Airport with a major new 50-acre rail freight terminal and extensive road improvements.

Combining rail, road and air connections, the six million square foot development is being delivered by SEGRO and Roxhill.

SEGRO is funding £100m of infrastructure at East Midlands Gateway, and along with work ongoing by Highways England and other highways authorities means there will also be £35m of road improvements associated with the scheme.
