A FRESH call has gone out for people to nominate the individuals and places of Leicestershire’s past that they feel should be honoured with a green plaque award.

Nominations for the fifth round of the popular county council scheme, which recognises the impact individuals and places across the county have had on local communities, opened on Monday, (March 19) and will close on Monday, April 30.

A dozen of the county’s most famous people and buildings will then be shortlisted by a panel of judges before a public vote to decide on those which will receive a plaque.

Coun Louise Richardson, county council cabinet member for green plaques, said: “The green plaque awards have been a success and we always get a fantastic response from the public.

“We’ve already recognised inventors, war heroes, comedians and a race horse to name a few, but would love to hear about even more people and places that should be recognised.

“I want to encourage as many people as possible to become involved in the next round.”

To be eligible to submit a nomination, people nominated must have been deceased for at least 20 years and property owners should be aware and agree in principle to the nomination, if a building is nominated.

Winners from the last round of the awards included one for knitting machine pioneer William Cotton at his former house in Factory Street, adjacent to the Peacock Inn, in Loughborough.
