Photo contest
THE annual Panel Competition took place at the meeting of Sileby Photographic Society held on Monday, March 19.
The visiting judge on this occasion was Simon Hickie, a member of Melbourne Photographic Society.
The competition was open to prints and digital images in panels or sets of three or four images with each panel combining to form one image for projection, the subject matter being that of the entrant’s own choice.
With that criteria being met, Simon was able to draw on his own experience when deciding which print or digital image fitted well with his own ideas and thoughts when judging this particular competition.
He also considered the technical quality of the images, and if the images were good as individual pictures but also fitted well together and told a story. The positioning, balance and composition of the panel as presented also played an important part and it was these factors, together with photographic technique, which were important to Simon when taking the overall view.
Simon awarded first and second places to Richard Storier for his monochrome print ‘In the Field of Combat’ and for his projected digital image ‘ The Work House’ respectively. Mandy Sherrington’s monochrome print ‘Boats’’ achieved third place.
To prove that his own photography stood up to scrutiny, Simon concluded the evening by projecting some of his own work. Examples of gorgeous sea and landscapes, natural history, street architecture, and a few grab shots captured on camera whilst going about his daily routine, provided second half amusement and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Colin Machin thanked Simon for a job well done, and for providing an insight into his own photographic preferences and interests.
Following the Easter break, the next meeting will be held on Monday, 9rd April, when round two of the Quarterly Competition will take place.
The judge on this occasion will be David Gibbins, ARPS, APAGB, EFIAP/b, BPE5*.
Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm, and are held at the Sileby Community Centre.
