CHURCHILL’S OTHER WAR ROOMS

-

Ahouse visited many times by Winston Churchill during the Second World War when it was used as a rural base for the Cabinet War Office, has had £245,000 knocked off its asking price after being on the market for over a year.

The property, which is also thought to be a former home of royal mistress Lillie Langtry during the late 1800s, at the time belonged to Churchill’s friend Brigadier-General Sir Harold Hartley, who recommended it be used for war work. The Cabinet War Office was most famously based at Whitehall in central London at what is now the Churchill War Rooms, but for a time its functions were moved to the Hughenden Valley in Buckinghamshire, where Sir Harold Hartley’s former home stands.

It’s a four-bedroom country residence on a quiet no-through road surrounded by countryside. This house was picked in part by Churchill to house the Cabinet War Office because Bomber Command was based at nearby RAF High Wycombe, it is claimed.

Boss Lane House has been upgraded since Churchill’s staff scurried around its 17th century floorboards and it now includes a modern kitchen extension as well as four bathrooms, three reception rooms, an oak panelled dining room, study, breakfast room and a double garage. There are also extensive “magical” gardens.
