Students take part in maths contest
TALENTED students at Loughborough’s Charnwood College, part of the David Ross Education Trust, recently took part in one of the UK’s biggest maths competitions.
Forty students from Years 12 and 13 took part in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge, which aims to stimulate mathematical problem solving among students.
Significant achievements from this series of math challenges include those of Year 12 student Marcus Quirk, who achieved a Gold in the first round, and then received a Merit in the ‘Senior Kangaroo Challenge’; a prestigious international award, open to students across Europe and beyond, that was only achieved by 4,000 students nationwide.
Marcus said: “Taking part in the Senior Maths Challenge has allowed me to test my mathematical knowledge. I used problem solving skills to come up with fulfilling solutions to tough questions.”
Other high achievers include Liam Johnson and Matthew Storr, who both won a silver certificate. Jacob Davenport, Greg Durand, Vesela Dimitrova, Jai Chandrana, Saagar Sutria and Billy Storr were also celebrating after achieving a bronze certificate.
Paul Killick, maths teacher at Charnwood College, was responsible for organising the school’s participation in the challenge. He said: “The Senior Mathematics Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for able mathematicians in Year 12 and 13 to test their knowledge.
“We were pleased to see nine of our students receive a certificate, including one student who progressed to the next round. Well done to all those who took part.”
