Talk on suffragettes

-

AT THEIR last meeting, members of, and visitors to, the Loughborough Archaeological and Historical Society (LAHS) were treated to a fascinating talk on the local Suffragette movement, delivered by Dr John Sutton.

This national movement, which helped to bring about the Representation of the People Act (1918) that led to some women being given the right to vote, had a strong Leicestershire and Loughborough presence, in, amongst others, Alice Hawkins, Lilian Lenton, Elizabeth Rowley Frisby, and the Corcoran sisters, Nora and Kathleen.

In this the centenary year of one of the successes of the women’s suffrage movement, it was good to hear about events leading up to this, especially those locally, and to be able to discuss points of interest. The meeting thanked Dr Sutton for sharing his knowledge.

The next meeting of the LAHS will take place on Thursday, April 12, 7.30pm at the Knightthorpe Road Methodist Church, at which the LAHS President, Professor Martyn Bennett of Nottingham Trent University, will present on the topic of Loughborough and its involvement in the English Civil War of 1642-1646, with a focus on the local General Henry Hastings.

Labelled a traitor, thief and villain, this talk will explore Hastings’ career and question our previous understanding of his life and position.

This is sure to be an informative talk! Everyone welcome: £3 for nonmembers of the Society.

The Old Rectory Museum opens for the 2018 season on Saturday 7th April, with an exhibition of art work from local group ‘LE11 1N Artists’.

This varied and exciting exhibition will showcase works by local artists Mary Byrne, Karen Goodwin Legg, Beryl Miles and Glenda Thompson.

Opening hours for both the Museum and the art exhibition are Saturdays 11am - 3pm, with the last date for viewing the exhibition being Saturday May 12: the museum will remain open until October.

Each Saturday one of the featured artists will be on hand to guide you around the exhibition and answer your questions: a member of the LAHS will be available.
