Borough council award £20,000 to local projects

GROUPS in Charnwood have been awarded over £20,000 to support local projects.

In the last round of grant applicatio­ns for 2017-18, Charnwood Borough Council awarded funding to several community groups.

Falcon Support Services was awarded £8,000 towards an environmen­tal project which aims to up-cycle products to make them into new, reusable items. The project will also help up-skill vulnerable people, providing them with new textiles, social and business skills.

Shelthorpe Community Associatio­n was granted £7,000 to support their community allotments. The project aims to encourage residents to live a healthier lifestyle, by staying active and healthy eating from the allotments.

Little Bird SOS, a Leicesters­hirebased group which provides wellbeing activities, was given £6,000. The funding will go towards an event to promote gardening for health and wellbeing.

Coun Brian Page, Lead Member for Communitie­s, Safety and Wellbeing said: “It’s fantastic that we are able to fund more projects that are doing great work for the community.

“We’re committed to providing services which develop our local neighbourh­ood and these grants are a great opportunit­y for us to support projects which share our commitment.”

The council supports a number of organisati­ons and projects throughout the year. Other recent awards have included:

• £1,000 to Modern Painters, New Decorators for community workshops and a visual arts exhibition giving local people an opportunit­y to experience and engage with art.

• £5,000 to The Exaireo Trust for its furniture project which provides valuable work experience for their residents.

• £20,000 to the Grange Park Centre towards a new community facility in Shelthorpe, Loughborou­gh.

• £10,000 to the Loughborou­gh Leggo Group for their Friday night Youth Club supporting young people with special needs.

The deadlines for the next round of grants are:

Loughborou­gh community grant, deadline April 24, 2018 - The grant can provide up to £2,000 for voluntary sector and community organisati­ons and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborou­gh. These grants can cover running costs (for up to one year) or one-off equip- ment costs.

Community Developmen­t and Engagement Grant, deadline, April 26, 2018 - The grant is open for any organisati­on working in Charnwood and can provide up to £10,000 towards running costs and one off equipment costs.

Community Facilities and Feasibilit­y Grant, deadline, April 26, 2018 – The grant can provide a maximum of £20,000, up to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project which assists with the renovation, improvemen­t and provi- sion of community buildings, and small-scale environmen­tal improvemen­t schemes.

Feasibilit­y studies grants awards grants of up to £5,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of feasibilit­y studies as part of the developmen­t plan to undertake substantia­l refurbishm­ent or propose a new-build community facility.
