Late goal secures vital point for Students in their fight against relegation

TOTAL MOTION MIDLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE LOUGHBOROUGH UNI FC 1 WESTFIELDS 1 A LATE goal from Cameron Gordon salvaged a point for struggling Loughborough Uni FC against mid-table Westfields and in the battle for survival against the drop from the Midland Football League’s Premier Division it could still turn out to be a vital point.

The first half wasn’t at all productive for the Students and they conceded possession far too easily and had the visitors taken their chances they could have been out of sight and at times they had to thank ‘keeper James Stallan for keeping them in the game. The goal they conceded eight minutes before halftime came about when Taylor needlessly gave the ball away and Westfields finally took full advantage and Craig Jones gave them a belatedly deserved lead.

After the interval the Uni played better but couldn’t create chances in and around the penalty area. One good bit of news was the return of Joe Boachie who came on midway through the second half for his first game since the turn of the year. The Uni have certainly missed their top goal getter and he was soon in the thick of the action.

However, it seemed as if the game would peter out to another disappointing defeat before Cameron Gordon suddenly found himself with a simple tap in following good work by Ben Last.

The Scholars are just three points above the bottom three places but with other sides picking up points the Students need to try and rediscover their form from October/November when they put together a very good run of form. However, losing players such as Boachie, Alex Read and Matty Crooks, arguably their three best performers hasn’t helped their cause.
