PARISH COUNCIL The following are extracts of interest from the minutes of the meeting of Normanton on Soar Parish Council held on February 8.

The full minutes can be viewed on the village website www.normanton-on-soar.co. uk, on the village noticeboard or on application to the clerk to the council.

New signage connected with drainage had been erected at the corner of Main Street. Water from the dyke, when full, would be pumped into the field on the other side of the flood bank. It was hoped that this may alleviate some of the flooding problems.

Lamp Post Poppies to commemorate World War 1 were available from the British Legion at a cost of £3 per unit. Coun Brown had agreed to fund the purchase of the poppies, and it was agreed that they would be attached to lamp posts through the village.

The BBC had contacted J. Hellier to discuss doing an article on the Ferry, and were looking to visit the site when the Ferry season opened with a view to interviewing Ferry users.

Coun Males agreed to fund the cabling needed to install electricity to the Ferry cabin.

It was anticipated that the new toughened glass for the notice-board would be installed during the next couple of weeks. It was reported that the noticeboard on Moor Lane required a new post.

The dog bin on the farmers field would be retrieved by Rushcliffe Borough Council and re-erected at the junction of Moor Lane/A6006..

It was reported that residents were dumping their garden waste in the corner of the playing field. The situation would be monitored.

Gaps in the hedge around the playing field needed to be filled.

It was proposed that Rushcliffe Borough Council be approached to see if there was a grant available for whips/trees.

Residents had asked for litter picks to be left in the village shop so that they could be collected and used to pick litter up from around the village. The litter picks would then be returned to the shop.

Pot holes on Butt Lane and Stanford Road had been reported to Nottinghamshire County Council and a works order had been issued. Further potholes were reported on the bend by Bowleys Bridge.

It was proposed that a new Parish Paths leaflet be produced to include updated information on The Ferry and the Community Shop.

A complaint was received that residents were dumping rubbish by the bottle bank.

It was suggested that a sign be erected saying only bottles to be left on the site.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The speaker at the meeting on April 3, was Liz Dunajewska who spoke on the subject of “Intricate knitting”.

Members were intrigued by the many different stories and knitted items that Liz and her helper presented.

It was interesting to hear about the development of knitting and the various ways the hands and fingers can be used in the process.

The competition for the best knitted item was won by Brenda Griggs, and the 50:50 draw was won by Susan Ward.

During the business of the meeting money was collected for the boat trip on 22 May, and names were taken for the Soar Valley Group meeting on 19 April, the ladies lunch group on 11 May, and a social media workshop at Newark on 28 April.
