CAMPAIGN Group 38 Degrees Loughborough is asking local businesses to sign up to a special pledge to reduce their plastic waste.

The campaign idea came after watching the thoughtprovoking David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’ series, which demonstrated the impact that discarded plastics have on our oceans.

Food and drink outlets are being asked to sign up to a ‘Plastics Pledge’, and commit to offering customers bringing their own reusable cups a discount, refilling reusable water bottles with tap water for free, and to stop using plastic straws.

Launched at a screening of ‘Demain’ (a film about climate change activism, organised by Transitions Loughborough last Friday, April 27) this was followed up with discussions with local people in the town market the next day.

Speaking on behalf of 38 Degrees Loughborough, Emma Ward said: “The steps we are asking businesses to take are small but impactful.

“They signify a willingness to take positive action to protect our planet. Locals who are trying to reduce their own plastics use will still be able to continue to

enjoy the town’s cafes, restaurants and bars.”

The campaign is endorsed by Transitions Loughborough, People & Planet, and also Love Loughborough.

BID said: “Love Loughborough are currently looking at campaigns and initiatives to help reduce the use of plastics within Loughborough town centre, both from businesses and consumers.

“Love Loughborough are delighted to support 38 Degrees on their campaign to encourage our local cafes, bars and restaurants to sign up to the Plastics Pledge and we thought a great way to do this could be to include a ‘virtual’ sticker on their business listing on the Love Loughborough Business Directory.

“We will also be looking to see if we can include this on the Loyalty App for each participating business.”

Participating businesses will also receive a certificate to display on their premises.
