130 homes for Sileby given the green light

PLANS to build more than 130 homes in Sileby were passed last week by Charnwood Borough Council.

The council’s plans committee gave permission for two sites, including one from Swithland Homes for 23 houses in Seagrave Road.

The second was from Persimmon Homes, for 108 homes on the old waste tip site off Cemetery Road.

The council heard that in the late 19th Century a brick works was established in the north eastern corner of the site.

The entire area was then quarried for clay for brick making over the next 60-70 years.

The brickworks were out of use by the 1950s and the buildings were replaced by a council depot and refuse incinerator.

The clay pits themselves were then used as a refuse tip. This practice contin- ued up until very recently.

The site has been filled in with soil and partially landscaped.

Both applications had been met with opposition by local residents, including Sileby Parish Council.

The parish council argued that it continued to be concerned about the impact development would have on the village, including road safety, congestion and parking.

Letters of objection from residents were received highlighting concern about the amount of development in the area.

One resident said in objection: “This village has had more than its share of housing developments in recent years.

“I can understand the steady growth of one or two houses but hundreds at a time is completely unreasonable and unrealistic.”

Both application were passed with conditions.
