Fruit shoot

-

A FEW weekends ago, taking advantage of the nice weather I ventured into the garden, trowel in hand, and declared war on the weeds. This weekend, the weeds fought back...

Juicy Realm is a gorgeous looking, roguelike twin-stick shooter which flips the food chain on its head.

Set years in the future, plants have developed sentience, sprouted arms and legs and are bidding to take over the world.

It’s up to you – and your extremely cute team of fighters – to prevent that happening.

Starting at base camp, you can

JUICY REALM PC (coming soon to PS4)

choose to play as one of four different characters.

There’s a ninja, a mercenary, a boxer and a botanist, each packing their own different weapons, stats and gear.

Choosing the bespectacled botanist, I ventured into the first battle arena to face down gun-toting fruits such as ninja watermelons, and shrubs with teeth looking to bite a chunk out of me.

Clearing the area unlocks a chest, which rewards you with various items including food, coins, and new weapons. I even found a baguette in one... who’d have thought battling veggies wielding a French stick could be so much fun?

Each adversary has its own fighting style, the pears have cute little bandit-esque eyemasks and carry single shooters, while the apples have a weird tattoo on their little faces and can fire multiple projectiles.

Later, you’ll encounter sand sharks that appear Tremors-like from the ground, and some decidedly prickly pineapples.

As you’d expect from a roguelike, Juicy Realm features randomly generated maps based in locations such as a forest, the desert and the deep sea.

Each map is packed with chests and Easter eggs for you to discover after you’ve wiped out the militant plants.

This game’s real strength though is the graphics, that beautiful art style is absolutely adorable. Saying that, it does leave you with pangs of guilt when you have to splat those sweet little blueberries.

As much as I enjoyed the game, the action soon became very samey, even teaming up with a second player only changes things up a little bit.

The other pain in the behind is the replayability. When you die, the game resets from the start, so all that looting, all those coins you collected, are gone and you have to do it again.

That being said, I really did enjoy the first few hours on Juicy Realm, and for just £7.19, it’s well worth the money. BUY IT: £7.19 at store.steampowered.com (look out for a PS4 release coming soon)
