72-year-old cinema facing closure threat

Traces origins to Loughborough College Film Society

A CINEMA established in Loughborough 72 years ago is in real risk of folding - unless a new wave of helpers can be found to safeguard its future.

The Flix not-for-profit cinema run by students, based at the Cope Auditorium on the Loughborough University campus in Epinal Way, has been offering movie screenings and more to students and the public for more than seven decades.

It has a state-of-the-art digital projection system, big screen and 7.1 surround sound.

But now the campus cinema finds itself at risk of winding up, according to James Moore, community liaison for Flix.

He explained that all of the current film society committee members are leaving after graduation. Normally there are some members who carry over to the next year and provide continuity, but this summer there is no one to book films in time for the autumn term.

Flix can trace its origins to the Loughborough College Film Society which was set up in 1946 at the old Loughborough Library in Greenclose Lane.

Help is also needed to recruit new members for the film society at the Freshers Fair in October and to support these members on an ongoing basis.

To encourage volunteers, Flix is holding an open day where Loughborough University students, campus workers and members of the community are all welcome to come along and find out more. It will take place on Sunday, June 3, between 1pm and 5pm.

People can just drop in to meet and ask questions, but if they are interested in the projection training which is running that day, officials recommend they pre-book by email as spaces are limited.

Outgoing chair of Flix, Jack Morgan, said “We are looking for people with a passion for cinema across all roles, including projection, film booking, marketing, membership recruitment and ticket sales.

“Drop in between 1pm and 5pm on June 3 to learn more about the roles on offer or email to pre-book a place on our projection training.”
