RAISE A GLASS TO DAD’S ARMY
Apub and restaurant that played a starring role in the legendary TV series Dad’s Army – and which appeared in half a dozen of its episodes – has been put on the market.
The programme, which ran for nine series, from 1968 until 1977, made stars of several already well-known actors including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Clive Dunn and Bill Pertwee.
So huge was its appeal that the programme’s theme tune, Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr Hitler, remains a sing-along favourite today, as does Captain Mainwaring’s derogatory “stupid boy” references to his youngest Home Guard member, Private Pike, played by Ian Lavender.
The Six Bells pub, which is near Thetford in Suffolk – where there is a Dad’s Army museum– played a starring role in three episodes – Ring Dem Bells, Wake Up Walmington, and All is Safely Gathered In – while its interiors featured in several other episodes.
The pub portrayed one of the 14 drinking holes in fictional Walmington-on-Sea, and remains a working pub and restaurant.
The Grade II listed property and business is now for sale at £695,000 and comes with a claimed annual income of £200,000, a 40-cover restaurant and professional kitchen, a bar and lounge, 10-room guesthouse at the back and owner’s accommodation upstairs in the main building. This includes a lounge, kitchen and three bedrooms.
