COUNCIL. Parish councillors at Widmerpool have re-elected Coun. Tony Mason as chairman for the new 2018-9 financial year The position of vice chairman was left for a future meeting.

Coun. Rey Belton updated the council in regard to the matter concerning the water course running through the village and in particular along Old Hall Drive. He said he had met an officer from Notts County Council and apart from a need to clear rubbish from the water course there was little else to do. The weirs, whilst not in a good condition, were not causing a problem. If they were recreated Coun. Belton suggested they could cause flooding under certain circumstances. The clerk was asked to contact Severn Trent Water to seek comment from them on if the remains of the weirs that do exist were removed. The clerk was also asked to obtain a quotation for the cleansing work on the watercourse.

The Litter pick had been successful and a good deal of rubbish had been collected. Street Light No. 2 Main Street had been reported and repaired.

At a Rushcliffe Borough Seminar earlier today the Borough Leader asked for all parish councils to look at tree planting in their villages. The Borough will make ten native trees available free. Coun. Belton was to investigate possible use of the trees being offered.

Coun. Edyvean mentioned the tree offer by the Borough and also said they were supporting the national campaign in regard to the collection off hard plastics and to include by them a ban on use of helium balloons and Chinese Lanterns from any of their properties or land.

It was agreed to order a further 10 for use in connection with the WW1 commemoration event in November at £3 each.

Fiona Carruthers, the council’s website host, gave usage figures for the site and said while the number of visitors was fairly constant they were very low. Members were urged to produce photographs for the clerk to submit for the site. Coun. Brooks said he would provide the clerk with old photographs from the history book that had been produced.

A letter was received from Mr Andrew Nix in which he complained of problems caused to him by inconsiderate parking by parents dropping off or collecting their children for the school bus for Loughborough Endowed Schools and which pulls into Church Lane .

He suggested use of the village bus stop near the Rugby Club ground. Members discussed the matter fully but felt it could not support the use of the alternative pick up point on road safety grounds for children on or at the side of a fairly well used road.

Coun. Anita Gotts wrote in respect of a need to advertise in the church newsletter that people could use the website to advertise their events.

A letter from Maggie Woodhouse in regard to the cutting of grass on the Beehive lawn asked if the council could be responsible for it.

Coun. Mrs Gotts was to obtain a price for such work from the church grounds contractor and was given power to ask for two cuts. Monty Haw, Senior forestry officer, Via Notts County Council wrote in regard to highway trees and in particular to an overhanging tree on Widmerpool Lane. He said any necessary work would be planned into a programme.

The clerk Mike Elliott was asked to contact the organisers of the Keyworth Scouts Turkey Trot event and to comment on the large amount of litter thrown down by the competitors en route through the village.
