Long Whatton and Diseworth

VILLAGE SHOW. Plans are well in hand for the annual Diseworth Village Show which this year takes place on Saturday 8th September.

The event is always a major one for the village social calendar and last year’s very successful show attracted several hundred people through entries or attendance.

The organisers are giving plenty of time to would-be competitors to prepare their entries, and the Schedule of Classes has already been published.

Information from the event organisers say an analysis of entries over the past five years has indicated a definite shift of interests and hobbies throughout the village community. Some previously popular classes have attracted very few entries recently while alternatively some of the modern classes have grown in popularity so much so that it has been a struggle to display them on show day properly and fairly. As a result, for this year it has therefore been decided that introduce some radical changes.

Organisers say that due partly to the timing of their show, flower entries are declining, so this group has been reduced in order to make way for a new set of classes designed especially for teenagers. There are new limits both in size and quantity set for the Photography classes and the return of the Victoria Sponge to the schedule was short lived, due to a dispute over the number of eggs that should be used. On the bright side a `Garden on a Paper Plate’ and a `Jar of Marmalade’ have returned!

Would-be exhibitors are urged, as a result of the changes, to study the list of classes carefully this year particularly to spot the omissions.

The Flower Arrangement this year has a topical theme of “Votes for Women”, celebrating the anniversary of women winning the right to vote in this country. The displays in this class should be represented by Green, Purple and White, the three colours which symbolise the recently well published struggle of 100 years ago.
