East Leake Willows top Division One

-

THE LONG trip for East Leake Willows to play Quorn Weavels was well worth it as their 57-49 (7-1) win took them to the top of Loughborough & District Bowls League Monday Division 1 after last weeks’ leaders Phoenix Pegasus went down 55-60 (2-6) at Shepshed Rams.

Queens Park Queens are steadily moving up the table with another good win this week 51-47 (6-2) at home to Syston Fosseway whilst Wymeswold Wolds extended the gap between themselves and Thringstone Woodpeckers following their 69-34 (6-2) win at Thringstone.

Syston White Plum increased their lead over St Margaret’s Maggies at the top of Division 2 following their 58-45 (6-2) victory over their rivals whilst Belgrave Cygnets moved into third place after their 50-49 (6-2) home win against Brush Peregrines, a result that leaves the Peregrines at the foot of the table. Kegworth moved off the bottom with a hard fought 58-50 (6-2) win at Birstall Lighthouse. St Margaret’s Saints hosted local rivals Birstall Sands and it was the visitors who walked home with the points following their 67-46 (6-2) win.

There is no change at the top in Division 3 with the game between leaders Rothley Crusaders and Sutton Bonington Riversiders already having been played in advance of the date, Crusaders winning 56-46 (6-2) so all eyes were on the rest of the teams who were fighting it out near the foot of the table. Phoenix Kingfishers were the pick of the bunch after a fine 43-34 (7-1) win at Nanpantan against hosts Brush Hawks whilst Sileby Swallows collected their first win of the season in their home game with Soar Valley Trent, with a 51-48 (6-2) victory. It was a top of the table clash at Wymeswold in Division 4 where the hosts Steamers went into the game in pole position, but visitors Shepshed Lambs were too good for them on the day and ran out comfortable 58-44 (8-0) winners to take over at the top. Greenfields Foxes collected their first win of the season from their away trip to Syston where they defeated Fosseway Romans 50-39 (6-2) whilst at Mountsorrel, home team Soar Valley Tay had to settle for a share of the points with Syston Green and Royals despite winning the match 60-47 (4-4).

Thringstone Rangers are the new leaders in the Thursday Division1 following their 72-44 (8-2*) win over local rivals New Lount Hares who could only field three rinks and will forfeit a further 2pts as a result. Wymeswold Wolds move off the bottom of the table after a convincing 89-58 (9-1) win against Brush Eagles whilst Shepshed North put out a depleted side fielding only two rinks against Syston Fosseway and paid the penalty going down 37-53 (4*-6) with a further four point deduction for an incomplete team.

East Leake Willows continue to head up Division 2 after a very convincing 78-59 (8-2) win at home to Phoenix Flyers whilst Loughborough Greenfields keep up the chase following their 83-60 (8-2) win at Holt Drive against visitors St Margaret’s Maggies. Queens Park Carilloners had an excellent 69-64 (6-4) win against Quorn Millers but still remain locked at the base of the table. With the top two in Division 3 not playing this week Kegworth took the opportunity to close the gap with a solid 77-32 (10-0) win against Shepshed South who played with a rink short and as per rules, will have a further two point penalty whilst in the remaining game Rothley Knights hosted local rivals Soar Valley Valoars and ran out 86-54 (10-0) winners.

In the Ladies Friday evening league, week 2 saw East Leake as the new early leaders following their 37-32 (6-0) win at Syston Fosseway with Wymeswold a point behind them after their 32-24 (5-1) victory over of last weeks’ leaders Shepshed Lambs. New Lount and Thringstone both opened their accounts with wins, New Lount had a close game at Quorn where they came away victorious 34-28 (4-2) whilst Thringstone took the honours at Loughborough Greenfields 34-21 (4-2). In week 3 games, Thringstone entertained Rothley in what was a very exciting and close game with the score and points equally shared 31-31 (3-3).

In the Loughborough & District Champion of Champions, Sam Dobson (St Margaret’s) won a close game with Mark Davies (Belgrave) 21-20 and will now play either Tim Allard (Shepshed) or John McKeown (Rothley) in the second round.
