Residents get chance to air views on HS2 scheme

RESIDENTS are being given another chance to speak out on the controversial HS2 proposals.

The Government confirmed its preferred route for Phase 2b of the High Speed Two (HS2) railway in July last year, so HS2 Ltd has spent the last 10 months progressing its early design and construction proposals.

A consultation event has now been confirmed for Monday, June 18, from 2pm to 8pm at the Best Western Yew Lodge Hotel, Packington Hill, Kegworth.

HS2 Ltd’s phase two director, Paul Griffiths, said: “The benefits that HS2 will deliver are significant and should not be underestimated.

“The new railway will play a crucial role in rebalancing Britain’s economy; driving business growth, creating jobs and securing investment right across the country.

“Understandably, people have questions and concerns about the construction and operation of the railway, and how it will affect them. These events present an ideal opportunity to talk to us about the project and find out more

information.”

At the events, HS2 representatives will be on hand to answer questions about a range of topics including engineering plans, environmental mitigation, and the impacts on land and property.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend so they can review the plans and talk to the team about the emerging designs and understand what this means for them.

A public consultation on HS2 Ltd’s draft environmental statement and proposals to minimise the railway’s potential impacts will be held later this year.

The HS2 proposals in Leicestershire did originally incorporate a tunnel plan, which would have gone through the East Midlands Gateway Strategic Rail Freight Interchange, sited just to the north of East Midlands Airport and being developed by Roxhill Limited. But they were

abandoned.

Instead, the HS2 route will now run to the south of the airport and the M1, with a crossing under the runway approach lights and a new crossing over the A6 in between Junction 24 of the M1 and Kegworth village.

A HS2 viaduct over the A453 at Ratcliffe Lane has also been confirmed along with a viaduct over The Green at Dise worth Brook flood plain.
