Loughborough Echo

Could have been at either Limehurst Boys or Garendon

-

DAVID Jamieson wrote in after spotting himself in an old school photo.

David said: “As a regular reader of the Echo for about the last 65 odd years I always start from the back to read the sports pages first (mostly football coverage - which always appeared on the back page until recent years) and then go to the Looking Back section.

“I note with interest the school photo on page 32 which is either the last speech day at Limehurst Boys School or the first speech day at Garendon School, I can’t really remember which one it was.

“Limehurst School was a segregated school which I attended for one school year before the boys moved to the newly built Garendon School.

“Speech days were an annual event in those days, probably called prize giving days today.

“I am on the front row, second from the left (looking really pleased to be there), Philp Colin sits on the end, (he now is a local funeral director).

“Moving along the line from left to right after myself is ? Loveridge, Keith Mitchell, Brian Hateley - not too sure who is on the end.

“The second row from left to right reads: ? Thurman, David Shephard, ? Green, John Bailey,Keith Perry, Roger Gray and Ron Eaton

“The only guy I recognise on the 3rd row in 2nd from the left who is Brian Burkenshaw.

“I am sure the lads will remember the school hymn sung on such occa- sions which was Jerusalem under the baton of the music teacher Mr Harry Lister.

“Music lessons at Limehurst were unusual. Mr Lister used to line us up at Limehurst, march us round to Baxtergate Church in Baxtergate, Twentyfive minutes of trying to get us to sing, and then march us back again to Limehurst for the next lesson.”
