A proud night for Fred Mitchell
IT WAS a proud night for Fred Mitchell, captain of the Bull (Diseworth) for nearly 30 years, when his team beat the Three Crowns, Wymeswold, in Loughborough and District darts League’s Charity Cup Final at the Town Hall.
In the pairs competition J Fitchett and R Tack of the Black Lion turned in an excellent performance to beat the Neal brothers from The Nelson.
The Echo reported that the singles final was punctuated by some good-humoured banter when A Chamberlain beat D Newton, both were from The Lonsdale.
Brothers reunited after 30 years
TWO brothers who lost contact with one another more than 30 years ago were overjoyed when they were reunited at Shepshed.
Claude Brogden, who had been living in Australia, drove up to 33A Leicester Road, Shepshed, in his large Japanese car accompanied by his Greek-born wife Sophie.
And when he knocked at the front door he gave the surprise of their lives to his brother and sister-in-law Mr and Mrs George Brogden.
Members of a family of 10, the pair lost contact around 1934 when Claude went into the forces.
Preservation order in Woodthorpe
TO SAFEGUARD the future of a building, which dated back to the 17th century, Leicestershire County Council made a preservation order for 80, Woodthorpe.
A statement said that proposal to demolish the building had been recently made and though the immediate threat had been removed it was considered that its future should be safeguarded.”
Dave Adcock wins egg and spoon race
DISEWORTH’S parish church garden fete drew an attendance of more than 300.
Included in the vents was a fancy dress competition and the winners were: Under-six Sarah Hine and Andrew Hine. Over-six: Linda Fletcher and Amanda Crowe.
David Holden won the flat race over 450 yards and Justin Thomas over 75 yards.
The egg and spoon races saw David Adcock win the seven years category and Sarah Hine the five years.
