Tunnel plans for HS2

MORE detailed plans have been revealed to residents to bring the HS2 rail line past East Midlands Airport and the M1 - including a tunnel and details of just how high the new rail crossing over the A6 will be.

Officials have confirmed that they plan to construct a short tunnel for the HS2 rail line to pass beneath the end of the airport runway.

The line will then emerge and rise onto an embankment onto a 11m high crossing over the A6 close to Junction 24 of the M1, which will continue on to a 12m high viaduct which will pass over the A453 towards Ratcliffe-on-Soar and on towards Long Eaton.

Conrad Jones, area manager for the HS2 project, told the

Echo: “Effectively there will be a short tunnel in the area near the airport, and we will be talking about developing that design with the airport.”

Officials also revealed that there are plans to create a mini power station for the line, at a site near the M1 junction to the west of Kegworth which will feed into the National Grid network and will be around 200m by 135m in size.

And they are also proposing to integrate the HS2 route with the A6 Kegworth Bypass and link road, currently under construction, though more details of this will be reflected at the next design stage.

They also said that the building of the rail line would not affect work on the new bypass.

Speaking at the public consul- tation event held at the Best Western Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth on Monday, Mr Jones said: “It is about allowing the information as we have got it out to the public, part of an ongoing series of events.”
