WI enjoy talk on recycling

-

UNFORTUNATELY our president, Valerie Greenhill couldn’t make it to the June meeting of the Thorpe Acre WI held at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall on Tuesday the 12th at 7.30pm.

It was left to Sue Y to extend a warm welcome to members and a visitor in her own inimitable style. She handed out several birthday cards including one to our Secretary, Linda.

It was the end of May and, hurrah, the Two Monkeys was open!

So, with just a small amount of furniture moving, a small group gathered around a table to drink coffee and eat cake. The Rocky Road was highly recommended.

June’s Coffee Morning will take place at the Queen’s Park Café towards the end of the month when we’re hoping that fine weather will be on the menu. July’s venue will be at Diolcino’s.

There will be a caffeine break in August but an espresso service will be resumed in September.

Our darts team played against a very nice team from Ashby Castle WI and we won 5 games to 2. Despite the score line it was a very close match and it was down to Linda not only seeing the doubles but managing to hit them that swung it in our favour. Having our ‘supper’ before playing might have had something to do with it! The next match is against Breedon on the Hill in July.

Sue Y has agreed to host the ‘Make a Christmas Tree’ craft session when Sue W will be demonstrating how make Christmas tree shaped Christmas decorations from cloth covered, plastic bottle tops.

With Christmas in mind the invitation for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival has arrived and members were asked to put forward ideas for this year’s theme. It has been agreed that the Wild, Woolly Women’s Workshop, where people have been honing their crochet skills, will now include knitting. So now it will be pins at the ready as well as hooks!

Carole was thanked for organising the social skittles evening at Syston Conservative Club. The company was jovial, the supper delicious and the evening much enjoyed. The errant mattress at the end of the long alley caused many a guffaw as it kept falling down at the most inopportune moments.

The chef confessed that he had never made a lasagne until taking on the stewardship of the club. We all assured him that he definitely had a talent for cooking.

Further events on the horizon include Sue W’s Strawberry Tea, where the wearing of hats in celebration of our Federation’s 100 years will be encouraged, and our now traditional visit to the dogs, the Greyhound Racing that is.

Linda read out a very comprehensive report from Vicky Goodman, our delegate at this year’s National Annual Meeting in Cardiff.

The Resolution ‘Mental Health Matters’ was passed almost unanimously receiving 98 per cent of the vote.

Barbara Adcock completed the ‘Race for Life’ in aid of breast cancer and thanked everyone for their support and sponsorship.

Correspondence from WI House and National was placed at the front of the table for perusal during tea with further information being found in County News. Linda advised members that there were no tickets left for the 100th Birthday Party to be held at Beaumanor Hall in mid-August.

The speaker this evening was Sue Drage whose talk was entitled ‘Recycling with a Difference.

Sue first started out as a hairdresser but always liked crafting and progressed from making ordinary greetings cards to making beautiful, bespoke, three dimensional cards.

She had two tables laden with examples of her work ranging from items knitted from plastic bags, paper and old t- shirts to bags made from crisp packets and ring pulls.

Some of it was literally ‘out of this world’ but that’s a story she’ll have to tell you herself. It was an amazing talk and in this case seeing really was believing! Sue W. gave the vote of thanks.

The raffle prize was won by Kayleen Cowley. Refreshments were provided by June Page and Dawn Lloyd. Lynne Hoad won the competition, with Janice Newbold coming 2nd and Sue Wardle, 3rd.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 10, at 7.30pm at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall. Peter Tyldesly will be giving us an insight into the history and running of Bradgate Park.

There may be a royal flavour to the evening if Lady Jane is mentioned. So, do pop along and join us as there will be tea, coffee, biscuits and a warm welcome.
