Society stages 70th AGM

-

ON THURSDAY June 28 members of the Loughborough & District

Philatelic Society attended the Society’s 70th Annual General Meeting.

After the formalities of any AGM had been dealt with, and all the reports of the officers of the committee had been presented and accepted, Garth Taylor, the current president confirmed that the incoming president for the 2018/19 year would be Brian Phipps.

Brian takes over at the first meeting to be held in September, ( Thursday 13th). This will be the second time he has been president, the first one was for the year 2010/11.

His vice-president will be Chas Ford. All other officers and committee members were elected as the previous year, except for Mrs Maggi Nipper, who unfortunately is leaving the area.

In “any other business”, Garth presented each member with a copy of the Rules of the Society. He said that the committee had decided that these needed an up-date and outlined the changes proposed. All were accepted unanimously and will therefore come into effect as from the 13th September.

The incoming president, Brian, then presented members with his programme for the year 2018/19 and outlined some of the displays and their presenters. The business of the AGM was then over.

After a short break, those who wished to hurry off to catch the end of the England -v Belgium match left.

Those remaining were treated to a short thematic display on Elements given by Garth. He said as of August 2017, 118 chemical elements are identified. A chemical element or element is a species of atoms having the same number of protons in their atomic nuclei .Garth did not display all of the 118 as there were no stamps that covered all of them. However, he did display over 80 sheets.

The items were displayed on light grey board. Of the more recognisable elements were, Helium, Lithium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Neon, Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Chlorine, Potassium, Calcium, Silver, Copper, Nicol and Gold etc. Of those not so well known, were

Beryllium, Argon, Scandium, Vanadium, Germanium, Gallium Selenium and Rubidium etc.

( To name all 85 would take too long). Each sheet consisted of a stamp, or stamps. Covers, Maxi-cards (generally showing the discoverer) and miniature sheets.

Also included at the top of each page, the name of the Element, its discoverer and chemical symbol. At the foot of the page was a short paragraph explaining where, or to what the element could be found in. Each cover, either had a stamp showing the element, and/or a handstamp or a picture of the discoverer.

After Garth’s display, Derek Whitmore gave a vote-of-thanks, saying we had had a very interesting display and congratulated Garth on his knowledge.

To end the Loughborough & Districts Philatelic Society’s year, members and friends attended their annual dinner on June 29, held in the lovely surroundings of the Longcliffe Golf Club.

The President, Garth Taylor, was thanked by all present for arranging the evening. Also, to the catering staff for providing a varied menu and to the Golf Club for providing the venue and their co-operation. It was a good evening with which to end the Philatelic year.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 13th September.
