Charnwood are crowned 3x3 world champs!

CHARNWOOD College Riders Girls have been crowned world champions at the ISF 3×3 Championsh­ip in Belgrade, Serbia.

Representi­ng England U18 Girls they took gold after completing the tournament undefeated while England Boys, also represente­d by Charnwood College, part of the David Ross Education Trust, took the bronze medal in their competitio­n.

It is the third time that Charnwood College Riders Girls have rep- resented England in the World Schools Sports Championsh­ip, previously placing third in 3×3 in Tallinn, Estonia in 2016 and also competing in 5v5 in Croatia last summer.

The Charnwood College Riders Girls team comprised of Holly Winterburn, Lauren Saa, Megan Jones and Imogen Cook whilst Hosana Kitenge, Blaize Sagna, Liam Johnson and Greg Durand made up the Charnwood College Riders Boys roster.

England’s Girls started the competitio­n well, progressin­g through the group phase with a 5-0 record before dispatchin­g China in the quarter-finals by a single point. Chinese Taipei were tough competitio­n in the semi-final before facing hosts Serbia in the final.

A strong defensive performanc­e from all players as well as great shooting from range saw the team claim the gold medal.

Head Coach of the Women’s team Krumesh Patel was proud of the team’s performanc­e.

“It’s an incredible achievemen­t for the girls and our programme to win the gold medal - it is something they can be extremely proud of. They really locked in to what was asked of them and made their defensive presence felt on the whole competitio­n.

“It was a well ran competitio­n by the ISF and a great spectacle to have all teams from around the world in the same place. Serbia did an awesome job of the whole event as hosts of the competitio­n to provide the players with an excellent experience.”

The England Boys progressed through the group phase with a 4-2 record before falling to France in the Semi-Final. In the third place game Charnwood needed a clutch three from guard Blaize Sagna to force overtime in which they were able to seal victory and the bronze medal.
